Satire and the Deployment of Irony in A Modest Proposal...

Satire and the Deployment of Irony in A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift Therefore let no man talk to me of other expedients: of taxing our absentees at 5s. a pound: of using neither clothes, nor household furniture, except what is of our own growth and manufacture: of utterly rejecting the materials and instruments that promote foreign luxury: of curing the expensiveness of pride, vanity, idleness, and gaming in our women: of introducing a vein of parsimony, prudence and temperance: of learning to love our country, wherein we differ even from Laplanders, and the inhabitants of Topinamboo: of quitting our animosities and factions, nor acting any longer like the Jews, who were murdering one another at the very moment their city†¦show more content†¦Swift expertly wields irony as a tool to satirize the many butts of his essay. Although he seems to be taking a swipe at the practices of many people, from the English oppressors and the Americans to the Irish landlords and the poor, oppressed Irish, it may be argued that the main butt of his essay in t he above passage are actually the Irish. The above passage can be read ironically or non-ironically but it is possible to view the ironic message in it as the true message that Swift might be trying to convey in his satire of the Irish people. Before examining the deployment of irony and satire in A Modest Proposal, it is first necessary to understand the brief historical background of colonial oppression in Ireland and to establish the context of the above passage to the rest of the essay. At the time A Modest Proposal was written, Northern Ireland was colonized by England and there was deep-rooted animosity between the oppressed Irish Papists, and their oppressors, the English and their descendants in Ireland, who were mainly Protestants and were by-and-large the land-owners in Ireland. During that period of political and religious strife, Ireland was also overpopulated and in the throes of poverty. As stated in its subtitle, A Modest Proposal is presented as a legitimate proposal for preventing the children of the poor people in Ireland from being a burden to their parents or country, and for making them beneficial to the public

Lycidas Poetry and Death Essay - 3788 Words

Lycidas: Poetry and Death Living in a period of important religious and cultural flux, John Miltons poetry reflects the many influences he found both in history and in the contemporary world. With a vast knowledge of literature from the classical world of Greek and Roman culture, Milton often looked back to more ancient times as a means of enriching his works. At other times, however, he relies on his strong Christian beliefs for creating spiritually compelling themes and deeply religious imagery. Despite the seemingly conflicting nature of these two polarized sources of inspiration, Milton somehow found a way of bridging the gap between a pagan and a Christian world, often weaving them together into one overpowering†¦show more content†¦To do this, Milton turned to the pastoral elegy, a classically rich style of poetry found throughout literary history and most often associated with just such a topic. This was presumably a natural choice for Milton, as James H. Hanford says, since Miltons familiarit y with poetry of this kind in English, Latin, Italian, and Greek made him recognize the pastoral as one of the natural modes of literary expression, sanctioned by classic practice (32). Going back to such masters as the Greek superior genius Theocritus and Virgil, the famous Latin poet, Milton clearly found himself employing a literary form with its roots in a world of almost exclusively pagan beliefs (32;35). Even with later Christian forms, pastorals relied on the ancients for their conventional characteristics. From Virgils time forth, conventionality in setting†¦is a marked characteristic of the pastoral that employed archetypal shepherds as its essential trait, and Milton hardly strays from the standard form in his work (40). This long-lived tradition of pastorals, then, immersed Milton in a surrounding of rich images and important mythological figures, taking him back in time to an age far removed from his own. With this in mind, Milton begins Lycidas in an exclusively, and seemingly appropriate, classicalShow MoreRelatedEssay on Imagery in Lycidas893 Words   |  4 Pages Imagery in Lycidas Lycidas, a poem written by John Milton as a memorial to Edward King, a classmate at Cambridge, reflects Miltons reverence for nature, his admiration of Greek Mythology, and his deeply ingrained Christian belief system. H1: The luxury consumption does affect the marketing of the local products as the local consumers will buy these products positively in a continuous way 2. Literature Review: 2.1 Consumer Behavior The behavior of the consumers depends on the mood and experiences of the customer. According to Henings, the causes and consequences of the luxury consumption are described. The demand of the consumers depends on the experiences and the quality of the products. Only those consumers are involved in the analysis of luxury consumers who have the high income source and who are known to the branded items. Some main factors are considered that differentiate between the luxury and non-luxury products. According to the conducted research, luxury brands are those whose prices are high and were of superior quality (Hennigs et al., 2016). The ratio of the price to functionality may be low of some certain luxury brands but the utility of these products was high. Luxury products compete with other products due to their brand, high quality and the brand identity from the perspectives of the customers. Luxury brands include the psychological and physical values (Taylor et al., 2015). 2.2 Theoretical Framework Model: In this theoretical framework section, the concept of the luxury consumption is shown in the figure. The workflow of the luxury consumption according to the consumer behavior is shown in the form of the figure that is shown below. Figure 1: Model of Luxury Consumption (Source: Taylor et al., 2015) 2.3 Importance of Segmentation of Luxury Consumption Behavior: As we have seen in the previous section, luxury consumption is important for the luxury consumers. Luxury goods are made of the best quality material and the luxury goods are long lasting (Wiedmann Hennigs, 2013). The people who are aware of the luxury goods always prefer to use the luxury goods due to the tangible features of the goods such as price, principles of the goods and the high quality. 2.4 Features of the Luxury products: The quality of the products is high and the price of the products is also high. The products are manufactured using high quality material. Luxury products provide a long term, access on those products to the consumer. The quality is too good of the luxury products and those products are available at very pocket-friendly prices to the consumers. 2.5 Classifications of the Luxury Products: The luxury products are divided into three parts and they have been discussed below. New Luxury Products: The consumer prefers the new products more than the old products due to the updated features. Old Luxury Products: The old products are consumed by less number of people due to high prices. Common Luxury Products: Sensual features are less in these kinds of products but the functional features are more like prices and the high quality (Zhan He, 2012). 2.6 Consumer Attitude towards Luxury Products: The concept of luxury is followed by the consumers to purchase the goods. The customers satisfaction and the loyalty to brands depend on the way of thinking of the consumers for luxury consumption. The views of the consumers matter a lot to find out the loyalty to brands. It is important to identify and assess the consumer behavior and perceptions. 3. Research Methodology: 3.1 Measurement of variables: Tested and existing measures are used in this study to measure the variable of methodology. There are two types of variables such as dependent and independent variables. The luxury consumption is the dependent variable that is dependent on the mood of the consumer. The luxury consumer is the independent variable; it is not dependent on any variable (Zhan He, 2013). 3.2 Research Design: A theoretical approach and the conceptual model are described in this paper that explains the workflow of luxury consumption. The research design consists of the purpose of the study and the time horizon and the study analysis. The purpose of the study is to segment the consumption of the luxury goods while the primary data collected method is used for the data collection. The quantitative and qualitative approaches are used in this study for the analysis. The planning time is also given in the methodology of this study (Ghosh Varshney, 2013). Descriptive Design: According to the previous survey, it is observed that the luxury consumption can be divided according to the experience and behavior of the customer for the product. The descriptive design is done by using the primary approaches of the data collection. Co-relational Design: This design is based on the online survey and the previous research. The luxury consumption can be segmented on the basis of the consumer behavior. At the duration of this design, it is observed that the valued based segmentation of the luxury consumption can be done according to the consumer behavior. 3.3 Sample: In sampling technique, the luxury consumers who are the part of a population have the same chance to be selected for conducting the survey of luxury consumption. There are two types of sampling techniques such as Random Sampling Technique and Convenience Sample Technique. In this particular study, the researcher has considered convenience sample technique to choose the sample size (Wang Griskevicius, 2014). The selection of the sample in this critic is corresponding to the objectives of the research and the issues that may come in measurement of the luxury consumption according to the human behavior. The main focus of this study is to find out the competition of the luxury brands and the growing markets of the luxury products on the basis of the consumer behavior for the luxury products. Those consumers who have the high-income source are targeted for this research. Income is variable for the study and it is a very important variable for defining the methodology of the luxury consumption. This sample paper is designed initially from the data collected online and from the data base of the various researches conducted. 3.4 Data Collection In this section, the primary data methodology is used for the research and data collection of luxury consumption. The primary data collection process is used for the data collection. In the market research, to collect the online data is the questionnaire. The various techniques are used for conducting a survey such as the telephonic survey, face to face survey or the electronic mail survey (Featherstone, 2013). To conduct the primary data collection, online data collection process is used because it reduces the cost of survey and provides the ability to the researcher to collect the data rapidly. The statistical approaches are used for describing the research objectives and the characteristics of the data. The individual officials have given their views and opinions on the concerned issue, which has provided much help to the researcher. 3.5 Instruments: The data collection process is done by using the survey program for primary data approach. Online data collection is valid for this study. This part is all about that this study is valid for the research. This part is described to define the validation of the research topic. 3.6 Ethical Consideration: At the time of the research work, the researcher paid a lot of attention to all the norms and values of luxury consumption. The study of the consumer behavior is necessary for value based segmentation of the luxury consumption. The researcher cannot force any other person to participate in the research work. On basis of the past conducted research, the researcher used various methods and followed various rules and regulations to conduct the research for this critic. According to the data protection act 1998 of U.K, the researcher maintained all the legislations for keeping and isolating the information retrieved from the service (McFerran et al., 2014). 4. Data Analysis and Findings: 4.1 Qualitative Approaches: The qualitative data analysis process encompasses the written definition task of the luxury consumption concept and value of the consumer behavior for the luxury consumption to segment the luxury demands. The value of the luxury products consumptions is divided using the qualitative data analysis (Kastanakis Balabanis, 2015). 4.2 Quantitative Approaches: Quantitative method is used for the finding the best results for the large body of the qualitative data. The consumer behavior is described using the quantitative approaches and the demands of the branded products are measured by using this approach. The primary data is gathered with the help of the online survey. 4.3 Findings: Four different behavioral segments are used to analyze the luxury consumption in this study. If the consumers do not use the luxury products, there will not the positive views for the branded products so they are not targeted consumers. The customers who were aware of the branded products and had high income, they will be considered as the targeted consumers for the value based segmentation of the luxury consumption (Kastanakis Balabanis, 2014). The researcher finds that the people are getting aware of the luxury consumption and the area of the luxury consumption is very wide. The value based segmentation of the luxury consumption can be done according to the consumer behavior. 5.0 Conclusion: According to this critic, the demand for the luxury goods depends on the attitude and the experience of the consumer. The main aim of this critic is to understand the various value perceptions of the luxury among the consumers. The study of the past research and the survey conducted of the current trends are helpful to forecast the luxury consumption-related issues. 5.1 Recommendations: Some strategies such as to control the luxury consumption can be used for the segmentation of the luxury consumption. The people are getting aware of luxury consumption day by day, the luxury consumption can be controlled easily by understanding the interest of the consumer. The luxury consumption depends on the interest of the consumers. The luxury products should be provided with utmost quality at standard price and the taxes should be low. 5.2 Application to the field of business and management: The application area of the luxury consumption is very wide in the field of business and management. The luxury consumption is necessary for those companies which produced the branded products. The total sell of those companies never decreases which provides the high quality luxury products (Kastanakis Balabanis, 2012). We can take an example of jockey, it is one only brand that provides the best men's products. Increased luxury consumption in the market is helpful for the business and management companies to improve their total turnover. The competition for the luxury consumption in the market will increase then the quality of the goods also will be increased. Reference List: Chon, H. W., Whang, S. M. (2014, July). Tornado Essays - Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Tornado

Tornado A tornado is a violent windstorm usually characterized by a twisting, funnel shaped cloud that is caused by a thunderstorm or a hurricane. It is produced when a cool air mass meets a warm air mass and forces the warm air mass to rise over the cool air mass very rapidly. Most of the damage from a tornado is a result of high wind velocity and wind blown debris. Most tornadoes occur during the months of March through August, but they can occur during any time of the year. They also seem to strike in the afternoon to the evening. What you should do and know You should know all key terms that are used to describe tornado threats. 1. Tornado Watch- This means that tornadoes are possible and you should stay tuned to a radio station for more reports. 2. Tornado Warning- A tornado has been sighted and you should take shelter immediately. 3. Severe Thunderstorm Watch- Severe thunderstorms are possible and they may bring a tornado. 4. Severe Thunderstorm Warning- A severe thunderstorm is here and a tornado may be present. 5. You should know the country and terrain in which you live. This is used in identifying the location of a tornado. 6. You should know the places you can seek shelter such as a cabin or rest area. 7. Practice doing this before you head out into the wilderness. 8. You should have emergency supplies on hand such as: Flashlight with extra batteries Portable battery operated radio with extra batteries First aid kit with all supplies and manual Emergency food and water Nonelectric can opener All essential medicines Money Sturdy, good shoes 9. Make an inventory of all your possessions and take pictures of them so if they are lost they you can replace them. Tornado Danger Signs Large hail Calmness before the tornado hits Cloud of debris Funnel cloud Roaring noise Calmness and clear skies after the tornado What to do during a tornado watch 1. Listen to your radio for the latest weather updates. 2. Be alert for an approaching storm so you can get ready and gather your emergency disaster materials up. If you see a funnel cloud call your local emergency number to report it if you can. 3. Be ready to take shelter. What to do during a tornado if you are outside If possible get inside a building If there is no shelter nearby or there is no time to get indoors, lie down in a ditch or a low-lying area with your hands shielding your head. Be aware of flooding in the low lying area or ditch. What you should do after the tornado Help any injured or trapped people Give first aid if it is necessary and do not move any seriouly injured victims unless they are in jeopardy of more injuries. Call for help Turn on your radio to get the latest information Use a telephone if you have one to make any emergency calls Did you know this... Tornadoes can be nearly invisible and only marked by swirling debris at the base of the funnel. On average the U.S. experiences about 100,000 thunderstorms a year and out of those about 1,000 tornadoes develop. Although tornadoes can occur throughout the world the U.S. has the most and most devastating ones. Tornadoes produce the most violent winds in the world. Tornado winds can be as high as 300 miles per hour, travel distances over 100 miles and reach heights of over 60,000 feet above the ground. In 1988 121 tornadoes struck 15 south central states. This resulted in 14 deaths and damages reaching $108 million.

Consumer forum Essay Example

Consumer forum Essay Example Consumer forum Essay Consumer forum Essay Once again, they placed a particular emphasis on fairness. Public transport was not typically regarded as credible and car clubs were not seen as attractive – partly because they fail to meet the need for autonomy, which personal ownership seems to deliver. We were able to conclude that the concept of shifting taxation away from car ownership and onto car use in a transparent way can command support. However, when it comes to taxation of fuel, vehicles and road use, people are often sceptical of the motives of policy-makers: they see taxes as revenue-raisers rather than carbon-cutters. But clear and visible hypothecation – from tax revenues to public transport – as in the case of London’s congestion charge, can help make such taxes more acceptable to people. These findings mirror evidence from elsewhere about the challenge of addressing the car culture. A prerequisite for achieving change is a committed effort to improve public transport services, to tackle long-term issues of access and mobility in a sustainable way. But effort is also needed to address our underlying attachment to cars. One clear opportunity is to work with the grain of people’s pride in their cars and accelerate the market for desirable low-carbon cars. We set out, right, a number of recommendations for improving the way we get around. These include some suggestions for developing a product roadmap for mainstreaming low-carbon cars, which can build on the work of the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership(93). Holiday travel Overseas travel represents a major aspiration for many people. Participants at the Consumer forum spoke of their attachment to flying abroad for sun and for short breaks. Among less affluent groups there were numerous references to how the low-cost carrier boom has opened up travel to a wider section of the population. People were also shocked when they were informed of the impact of flying on climate change. For many, flying has always been presented as a positive thing, a chance to broaden your mind. ‘You just want to experience as much as you can, and learn about the different ways of living as well. And you can’t do that by staying around the same people. ’ Consumer forum participant There is a clear paradox in the relationship between travel and sustainability. Many champions of the environment and the developing world would acknowledge that travel was a driving force in opening their eyes. Yet there is no question that we urgently need to limit the rapid increase in carbon emissions from frequent flying. The fact that one of the ten breakout groups at the Consumer forum chose an end to internal flights within Britain as their ‘best idea of the day’ demonstrates that attitudes are open to change. It may be that, with careful and visible investment in infrastructure, and improvements in inner-city rail services (where these are a realistic and available alternative) more people might become receptive to leadership on curbing domestic flights. Even so, there are fewer alternatives to air travel in some cases. People in Northern Ireland, for example, can claim with some reason that air travel helps to reduce their potential isolation from the rest of the UK and the European mainland. Overseas travel is a more contentious area. Of course, projected emissions growth from aviation means that demand management is urgent and essential. Bringing aviation into the Kyoto Protocol and emissions trading schemes will be important steps. But it would be short-sighted to think that we can leave air passengers out of the equation when we push for more radical interventions. As we have argued upfront, if policy-makers and advocates are to create and retain the mandate for the bold action that is needed on sustainable consumption then policy will need to actively touch the lives of citizens and engage with them honestly and courageously. Our contribution has been to see how public support, and hence political will, can be built for essential demand management measures. This is the rationale for rolling out carbon offset on an opt-out basis.

The Importance of Children Literacy in Early Years Dissertation

The Importance of Children Literacy in Early Years - Dissertation Example The children in their early stages have a particular mindset and developmental learning needs. They usually learn by seeing others in their surroundings from where they belong to, especially from their parents and all those who are providing care for them. So it highly important for them to give proper effort and nurture them to such an extent so that the child develops proper learning spirits. It will help the children to gain various subject knowledge, skills and understanding levels. It is important to provide them with a learning environment so that children can develop their own active learning. (Whitehead, 2009, p.x) It is important for the children in their formation stage to develop language and communication skills. This can be developed similarly which have been mentioned above by the carers, parents, teachers, and people who all are associated with the children during this period. As is known that learning is a continuous process. So it is obvious that children start learn ing since they are born. Thus during this period, they need proper guidance which will help them in future to be a better human being. So communication and language in that sense remain the most important part of a child’s growth stage. (Whitehead, 2007, p.xv) so it needs to keep in mind that development in the early years is very vital part as it is the most delicate stage of children. They could be mold in every possible way which will guide them to build up their future. The purpose of this study is to understand and review the theory concerning early literacy development. The different areas of literacy development could be language, communication structure, writing and reading skills. (Many, 2009, p.171) the view of literacy practices of children in early years must be recognized in their own way rather than forcing them to do something follow any particular strategy forced by other (Bradford, 2009, p.14). A change model is used to propose changes in child literacy progr ams on the basis of the literature survey conducted. The literature search strategy which we will be using here is various sources from books, scholarly articles and other information from Ebsco website. Ebsco provides a database of various articles which can help to collect detail information about the subject. Thorough study on the literature review of various authors will give an idea about the discussion and how they have formulated the issues. Apart from this primary and secondary researches will be evaluated which will provide detailed information about the study. Primary researches conducted by researchers and the result which has been generated as per those researches will help to simplify the matter.
